Francis Macdonald is Assistant Professor of Earth and Planetary Sciences at Harvard University. He is a geologist who integrates geological mapping, stratigraphy, geochemistry, geochronology and paleontology to reconstruct Earth history. Current projects focus on Neoproterozoic successions and the relationship between low-latitude glaciation, eukaryotic diversification and perturbations to the carbon cycle. Efforts within the Foundations of Complex Life team include providing geological context to geochemical, micropaleontological, and biomarker samples.

Francis was awarded his BS from Caltech in 2001 and a PhD from Harvard University in 2009.
