I am involved in trying to understand the relationships between environmental change, ecological opportunity and developmental potential during major evolutionary transitions, particularly associated with the origin and early radiation of animals. Specific current projects include modeling the role of niche construction and ecosystem engineering in constructing biological diversity, and examining how the formation of a hierarchical regulatory network in metazoan development influenced the production of morphologic novelties.
